[Bug 1053649] [NEW] Update Manager crashes

Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.04

I cannot update, I cannot access my software center either.  I hope I am
doing this correctly, I am very sorry if I am not.


Everytime I try to update it gives me this message at the taskbar:

'Error:Opening the cache (E:Encountered a section with no package:
header, E:Problem with Merge List/var/lib/apt/lists/security.unbuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_multiverse_binary-i386_Packages,
E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.)

I have no idea what this means. Please assume I know nothing because I
honestly don't.
