I interpret this to mean that you booted a 12.10 image on a 12.04.1
system and were not present the option to upgrade your existing install
to 12.10. Is that correct?

Upgrading Ubuntu 12.04.1 from iso isn't given as an option
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete

Attempting the upgrade case by using the installer image on the iso,
the option to upgrade is grayed out and not selectable. Ubiquity
