Sorry, you are right, what works for me in CM9.1.0 is in fact mass
storage mode. Glad to see it back for now, but it does of course
dismount the storage from the phone while in use. So the MTP problem is
still there.

Bug description:
  Android 4 will not support anymore usb mass-storage protocol. However,
  there is an easy way to access the files on such devices for advanced
  users using mtp-tools and adjusted udev-rules:

  cream-sandwich-phone-to-ubuntu-for-file-access/ . Ubuntu Precise
  Pangolin (12.04) should be prepared for Android ICS devices and grant
  easy access to music and pictures and other files to all users.
