I'm having trouble understanding your description. When reporting bugs,
it is vital that you be as specific as possible. Could you please try
to describe exactly what you did, what you expected to happen, and what
happened instead?

By the way, update-grub does not install grub; it just updates the grub
config file. If you need to reinstall grub, you should run "sudo dpkg-
reconfigure grub-pc" and make sure that the correct drive is selected.

Title:
grub2 installed on usb drives doesn't update automatically

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit installed on USB external drive: grub2 package updates correctly but the new bootloader version is not written automatically to the external boot drive that keeps the old one, needs to be updated manually every time with grub-update.
The os often boots from different machines and has been updated from 9.10 to 10.X/11.X/12.04. The issue started after the 11.04 distro upgrade .
