Need to install the 'extra' package which contains the additional
modules.
These dependencies are brought in with the 'linux-image-server' package
but not with the 'linux-image-virtual' package.
** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)

Title:
Quantal kernel doesn't support virtio_console module
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Status in “udev” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
Under libvirt you can specify special dedicated serial channels that
link the Host to the Guest OS.
e.g.
<channel type='dev'>
<source path='/dev/urandom'/>
<target type='virtio'/>
</channel>
On a Redhat derivative distribution this would show up in /dev as
/dev/vport0p1 (with an associated link name if one was specified).
On Ubuntu they don't appear at all.
lspci does show that the controller exists:
00:07.0 Communication controller: Red Hat, Inc Virtio console
And the kernel appears to enumerate the device.
But no devices are created in the filesystem on Ubuntu.
