While the bug is displayed in partman-auto-lvm, I believe it could be also reproduced in the manual partitioning.
Also I'd rather fix the bug where it happens, instead of working around it higher up in the auto partitioning.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: debian-installer

  I have a ubuntu 7.10 beta server I'd like to reinstall from scratch.
  During the disk partitioning, I'd opted for "Guided - Use entire disk
  and setup LVM" Part way through it informed me that the volume group
  name was already in use. Surely this option should setup a new LVM
  instance and use the entire disk, even if a LVM instance already
  existed?

  How can I blank this without manually having to create volumes? I
  think this is a bug
