OK, I'm not sure why you've changed the group on mlocate, but it sohuld
match the group on the mlocate.db; typically as mlocate:

dg at major:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/locate /etc/alternatives/locate /usr/bin/mlocate /var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root          16 Jul 17 19:09 /etc/alternatives/locate -> /usr/bin/mlocate
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root          24 Jul 17 19:09 /usr/bin/locate -> /etc/alternatives/locate
-rwxr-sr-x 1 root mlocate    39512 Aug 15 04:26 /usr/bin/mlocate
-rw-r----- 1 root mlocate 11823635 Oct 27 12:44 /var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db

  Hi there!

  my locate database is denying me access.
  When I:

  $ locate crap
  locate: can not open `/var/lib/mlocate/mlocate.db': Permission denied

  This along with a host of other problems (see
