Yes, put the cd into your machine, reboot off that cd and it should take
you into installer. This might be much quicker then upgrading 3 times to
get to 12.04 LTS.

Alternatively you can change your /etc/apt/sources.list to read:
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ instead of all occurances of http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
Then the upgrade should work.

Title:
downloaded disk will not auto-run on startup.

Status in “installation-guide” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I have Ubuntu 6.6 on an old hp machine, formerly a win2000 machine.
No matter the boot sequence settings for start-up, only 6.6 runs. The Downloaded install disk will not initiate installation.

Apparently 6.6 is too old to update, or allow the new version to take
  over.

What do I do ? I am not proficient enough to manually install via the
boot sector. I cannot even find gparted.
