Ogra, I think we can close this for now -- I tried all the memory sticks
I have locally, none failed. If/when it happens again I can reopen.

Title:
armhf-omap4: a disk formatted with ext4 fails to mount with partman

Status in “partman-base” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in “partman-base” source package in Quantal:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Pandaboard ES, armhf-omap4 Alpha3 20120725.3. Using an already
configured, ext4, single partition memory stick causes partman/kernel
to fail to recognise the volume.

Installation can continue, and retrying "detect disks" will now show
  the memory stick as /dev/sda.
