ARM images now use the fixrtc script which should help with that.

Title:
Should set time from image timestamp if RTC is in the past
Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
Binary package hint: casper
Hi
On imx51 boards, we often have issues with the clock resetting to 1971
or even before that. That gives serious trouble to userspace (for
instance Xorg apps cant handle timestamps before 1971). It also
exposes a warning on boot, when casper runs gpg for some verification:
the timestamps on the key are in the "future".
I think it would be sensible to set the date to the date of some
timestamp file in the image if the clock appears to be in the past.
This is only for as long as ntp hasn't been run, but at least all
files created in the mean time will have a decent timestamp and
programs wont be confused if they compare the current date with
timestamps in the image.
We could generate an explicit date file or simply stat some file on
the live media's FS, for instance the date of the root directory or
something similar.
