Nothing wrong on casper's side, this points toward a broken copy-on-
write filesystem or underlying storage partition.

Bug description:
  I'm running Elementary OS 0.2 build 20120504.

  If I remove the boot parameter "quiet splash"

  I see a message like:

  Begin: Adding live session user... ... pwconv: failed to change the
  mode of /etc/passwd- to 0600
