You need a bit more than just "persistent". You need to have a writable
media with a pre-created ext3 partition and add cdrom-detect/tryusb=true
to the kernel command-line.

** Changed in: casper (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Invalid

Title:
  System hangs on 'persistent' mode

Status in “casper” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: casper

  Description:	Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
  Release:	11.04
  casper:
    Installed: 1.261
    Candidate: 1.261
    Version table:
   *** 1.261 0
          500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ natty/main amd64 Packages
          100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Expected to load persistence mode using F6 command typing space +

nothing happened after several minutes. Tried twice, same USB stick.
