Status in “bash” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  erasedups is very useful configuration setting as otherwise history
  gets quickly poluted with repeated commands. It is one of the first
  things I do when I install new Ubuntu version (right after fixing
  resolution). It would be nice to have it as default setting.

  HISTCONTROL=ignoredups:ignorespace:erasedups
