Title:
Boot menu completely broken if external usb keyboard used (touch it
and you won't be able to boot)
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I have a laptop, and I often use it with an external USB keyboard and
an external screen connected.
Recently II observe the following issue (maybe it's been there before,
but I usually didn't need to change the boot selection so I never
triggered it):
-- REPRODUCES THE ISSUE --
- turn on the laptop with the USB keyboard already connected
- touch the up or down arrow key on the external keyboard to pick a boot option
=> the system goes berserk and stops responding correctly to both the
external and builtin keyboard. It looks like some key got stuck,
permanently pressed. The cursor will move all the way down or all the
way up but you can't choose an item. Also, I hear noise from the
speakers (like pulses). Disconnecting the USB keyboard won't fix the
issue. I have to switch off the computer
-- DOESN'T REPRODUCE THE ISSUE --
- turn on the laptop with or without the USB keyboard connected (it's ok to have it connected as far as you don't touch it)
- never touch the external keyboard
- use the built in keyboard to navigate in the boot menu.
=> boot menu works fine and I can boot.
If this was a hardware issue, it would show up even after boot. Instead, once I have booted correctly, I can use the external keyboard without any issue.
So it must be some software issue in the linux loader or something
