This is fixed in Ubuntu 12.10, by removing the text from the progress
bar altogether.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-manager

  Since upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, the dialog window displaying the
  progress-bar for downloading and updates is too narrow to contain the
  background string translated in french.

  The default width should be increased.
