After editing /etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf 
And deleting this line: <include ignore_missing="yes" deprecated="yes">~/.fonts.conf</include>

The constant errors I had been seeing on the terminal when launching
evince and other apps stopped displaying.

  within ubuntu distribution upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 quantal -
  errors appeared repeatedly:
