Public bug reported:
I have a Dell Latitude CPX with about 6G hard drive and 256 of RAM. The man who gave it to me also gave me a CD with Ubuntu 6.06.1 Dapper on it. That CD will boot up and run on this machine. Depending on the program I have open, it operates quite efficiently, although it is slow to boot up and slow to run certain of the larger programs. This appears to be a full install of Ubuntu with Open Office, screen savers, etc. on it.
I have wanted something speedier than that and have decided to use the computer for a test/ loaner machine to try out some of the smaller operating systems. I decided to begin with Lubuntu since I am more familiar with Ubuntu than other Linux programs, and it seems to be a bit more complete than some of the other light alternatives.
I copied the alternate install to a CD and have twice successfully installed the program. It runs surprisingly fast on this machine, and I am not displeased with the speed. I have not had this install hooked to the internet as yet, so it is a fresh install standing alone on what was on the CD. I am experiencing two difficulties.
1. When I boot up the machine and sign in with the password, sometimes, after I hit enter, the screen hangs and nothing else happens. All I get is the blue Lubuntu desktop screen with nothing else on it. This does not occur every time, but at least a third to a half of the time. I have waited, but it never went anywhere.
2. When the operating system does open after sign in (the speed for that is good) I only have the program barely open when it tells me that 12.04 has to close due to an unexpected problem. It gives the option of "continue" and asks me if I want to report the problem. I have hit yes, even though I am not as yet online with this machine. But the message that I receive is "This problem cannot be reported: This is not an official Ubuntu package. Please remove any third party package and try again." I am not certain if it is talking about the problem being caused by one of the installed packages, or if it is referring to the operating system itself, which, I downloaded from an official Ubuntu site. But, if, as I suspect it is talking about one of the installed packages, then something is wrong with one of the packages that are a part of the official alternate install operating system. I just wanted to make you aware of that, because I am getting this message quite often. The message doesn't really seem to cause any havoc. It closes what I am doing, but it does not close down the system and reboot. Sometimes I receive this message within seconds of sign on, before I even have a chance to hit the start button in the left hand corner. So there are no programs open which could create a problem. After I receive the message it allows me to keep on computing.
I will eventually get this computer online and do updates and change out some of the programs, but until then, I am not finding that I have a problem free fresh install. I had hoped to sometimes loan this computer out at times to folks whose computers are down and they just need a way to play games or check e-mail. Because Lubuntu is such a simple program, it would be a good introduction to the world of Linux for them.
Anyway, those are the things I wanted to make you aware of at the moment. I appreciate your work so far.
