Unfortunately the bug was fixed in the aptdaemon gtk widgets but update
manager now uses its own progress window (quantal). I will have a look
if we can back port the fix.

Bug description:
  update-manager details is one line (the terminal when expanding the
  details expander). This way you can't see what happens and is the
  function useless
