You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Linux is incompatible with windows dynamic disks and cannot be installed
alongside windows in such a disk. The ubuntu installation routine does
not detect that a drive is a windows dynamic drive and reports the disk
structure incorrectly. For details see
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=116723&p=646747#p646747
No warning is given to the user. If the user were to install to what
ubuntu thinks is a partition, data loss is likely.
Expected:
The install routines should check if the disk is a windows dynamic and if so, should only allow complete overwriting of windows, or stopping the installation. It should not allow the user to try to install dual boot. Ideally, it would give the user suggestions on backing up their windows data and point to how the drive might be converted back to "basic".
This bug affects other distributions also, so this is probably affecting
upstream as well (I didn't try a debian install).
This occurred trying to install Ubuntu 12.04, 32 bit from a liveCD.
