Title:
Modprobe causes kernel NULL pointer crash desktop install

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
While installing 32-bit 12.10 Quantal Quetzal on my Asus M2N-e from
DVD, the GUI disappears and the error shows:

[ 1000.576189] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000004c
  ...
  [ 1000.576734] Process modprobe (pid: 17582, ti=c6b08000 task=f213bf70 task,ti=c6b08000)
  ...

(The full error is in the attached photo.)

If I wait a bit and hit ctl+alt+F7 I can get back to the GUI, and the
status is still "Loading module 'usb-storage' for 'USB storage'...,
and in the little window below it says:

  Nov 10 22:59:41 ubuntu ubiquity: /bin/check-missing-firmware: 267: /bin/check-missing-firmware: mountmedia: not found
Nov 10 22:59:41 ubuntu kernel: [ 1000.576189] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000004c
  (the above dump follows)
  Nov 10 23:23:29 ubuntu kernel: [ 925.215855] ---[ end trace 1cadb8b154af9f2e ]---

Nov 10 23:23:29 ubuntu acpid: client connected from 2965[0:0]

And then it just sits there...
