Installing python-gnome2 on Ubuntu Server 12.04.1 LTS solved the problem
for me. However, I don't know why, except that it appeared to pull in a
bunch of DBUS interface libraries.

Shouldn't usb-creator pull in these libraries when it is installed?

  starting usb-creator-gtk will give the following error if you are current with updates for 10.04 x64
  "An error occurred while talking to the udisks service."

  this is the first time I have seen this error.
