MANY ADDITIONAL ERROR MSG'S LOOK LIKE THIS:
e.g.:
"Could not install '/var/cache/apt/archives/ncurses-bin_5.9-1ubuntu5.1_i386.deb'

The upgrade will continue but the '/var/cache/apt/archives/ncurses-
bin_5.9-1ubuntu5.1_i386.deb' package may not be in a working state.
Please consider submitting a bug report about it.

--It seems like I  may have tried to upgrade too far ahead at some
point.  I read only today that I can only upgrade to 12.04 from 10.04 or
11.10.  I am still apparently at 11.04.  Do I need to fix or re-install
11.04 before going any further?  If so, how do I do that?

Could this all be a result of bad hardware, i.e., corrupt hard drive?

Bug description:
  No updates or upgrades have successfully installed since 11.04.  BUT, apparently SOME things have upgraded but not others.  I've been getting the error msg. :  UPDATES have been DOWNLOADED BUT NOT INSTALLED...CHECK YOUR CONNECTION...  
  I think there may have been an error long ago due to interruption in connection while downloading, and kept thinking it would correct itself during subsequent updates, but it has not done so.  I am still at 11.04 and Now, I  tried  to do the completed upgrade again, from 11.04 to 11.10, so that I can then upgrade to 12.04.  It did not work --downloaded all but did not all install.  HOW CAN I FIX THE INSTALLATIONS AND GO FORWARD TO 12.04?
