Eesh, I was messing up by installing the i386 instead of amd64.
Everything works fine now, upgrade was successful.

Title:
kernel update fails due to dependency problems
Status in “dpkg” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
I am trying to update the Ubuntu kernel on my laptop (Lenovo X220) to
the mainline stable version of kernel 3.4 for Precise 12.04.
I downloaded the kernel files from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.4-precise/ or from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/2012-05-22-precise/
Once I had the following three files in a folder, I ran sudo dpkg -i
*.deb
linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb
linux-headers-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb
linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_i386.deb
However, the update does not work. I get the following output (with
both kernel 3.4.0-999 as well as 3.4.0-030400) :
