This is very strange. Can you boot a livecd and run:

sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sda3

Also can you try booting the super grub disk, press c to get to the
command line, and run ls -l and post the results? You can find it here:

Title:
Grub install fails on fresh 11.10 install

Status in GRand Unified Bootloader:
  Unknown
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Used "boot repair" in response to the following error after a fresh
dual boot install of Ubuntu 11.10 [from CD - not wubi] on a WinXP
  Thinkpad laptop -

  error: unknown filesystem.
  grub rescue>

Performed the 1 click recommended repair, however the error message remained. The machine would not boot.
The MBR can be restored using the Win2K Install CD, and the windows install with data files then functions normally.

Attempts to restore the Grub 1.99 bootloader per

  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708

get the identical [failed] result, even though the sudo grub-install
xxx reports no errors upon completion. Attempted the boot-repair
"Purge and reinstall" option, however this resulted in the same error
  screen.

The boot info file after the repair is here -
