Problem resolved: I've tested and confirmed that one of the two memory
cards on the PC is faulty. Hence the problems when memory use was more
intensive, e.g. booting, using Gimp or Firefox!
New set of memory cards is due to arrive tomorrow - PC is currently
running with just one memory card (1 GiB) and exhibits none of the
previous faults.
Sorry to have added unnecessarily to your burden.

Title:
Crashed during installation from a disk.
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 overnight and it appeared to work in the morning. Computer began to crash randomly but would reboot. I tried updating but although updates downloaded into cache, they did not complete; I found my computer constantly downloading the same updates.
I downloaded the .iso and made a live DVD. My 'Home' folder is in a separate partition so I did not format that when I booted off the live disk I burned. Stopped with error message.
I checked the list of bugs reported and there was one suggesting that an unformatted 'Home' partition could be a problem. IIRC it was listed as 'fixed' so I downloaded the .iso again and burned a second live disk using my netbook and an external DVD drive, hoping that .iso might have been updated.
I have a backup of the PC's 'Home' partition so this time allowed installer on PC to format all three partitions (root, swap and Home) using third option regarding partitioning screen.
Same outcome.
The netbook upgrade to 12.04 64-bit from the first live disk was successful, so I have that for day-to-day use.
