Forgot to add that system had just been started and was running
Thunderbird with calendar addon.  No other applications had been started
and the administrator password had not been previously entered (except
for logon).

  weekly updates.  When the Install Updates button was pressed,
  installation proceeded without first prompting for the administrator
  password.
