Title:
  update manager crashes

Status in “apt” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Release 12.04

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
  information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
  MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ca.archive.ubuntu
  .com_ubuntu_dists_precise-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The
package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

software centre would not start either. (window would initially open,
  but as loading would crash)

After typing "ubuntu-bug update-manager" into the "Run Application"
window, I received the message "Could not determine the package or
  source package name"
