I was able to solve this by booting with the kernel parameter
"nomodeset".

  I just get a black screen. Please find the hardware configuration in
  the attached file.

  Note that I'm reporting this from 11.10, because you deliberately make
  it difficult to report bugs properly without running the ubuntu-bug
  tool - which I can't run in 12.04, because it doesn't even boot.
