In Ubuntu 11.10 I can change the brightness level but every reboot it started always on maximum level.
Now in Ubuntu 12.04 I can't change the brightness level (the meter goes up and down but the actual screen brightness don't change) but the system starts at the brightness level I left on Windows.
I'm using the proprietary AMD catalyst drivers. With the open source drivers it happens but sometimes it works, when it works it boots with maximum level like in ubuntu 11.10.

Bug description:
  Hello guys.I am new in ubuntu and i bought a brand new laptop acer
  aspire 5745-dg with windows but i put and ubuntu together.My problem
  is that the brightness changes from windows but i cannot change it
  inside ubuntu,for example the fn keys don't work and i cant change the
  brightness from power management too.The funny part is that the fn
  keys for the sound work great!My problem is that the brightness is
  always at maximun as a result to reduce my battery life!!I have
  reported this problem to many sites but noone could help me..:/I have
  already tried to change some lines in grub but nothing changed.I also
  have heared that this might be a bios problem...Can you please help me
  with this serious problem???I would appriciate that!!!
