Cheese still hangs on my machine, but the webcam does work correctly.
Just tried using gstreamer on the commandline, which gives me a window
with the webcam stream:

$ gst-launch-0.10 v4l2src ! video/x-raw-yuv,width=640,height=480 !
ffmpegcolorspace ! xvimagesink
