The blank screen that shows up in the screenshot didn't respond to
switching focus to it, then clicking on it or hitting enter.
killed off update-manager, and then restarted.
It took me to partial upgrade without option to check for updates, etc.
to the package list.
It then complained about ubuntu-desktop meta package wanting to be removed, but on the black list, and effectively exited.
There are about 153 packages ready to install based on what is summarized on the icon.

Doing update on precise this morning, update takes me to partial
update (usual pattern), but this time the partial update froze rather
than completing. Screenshot attached.
