Title:
Cannot install grub using PATA optical drive and SATA hard drive

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit. Attempting to install on Dell Dimension 4600
Pentium 4 from live CD installation CD. When using PATA optical drive
the install brings up a window "Cannot install grub" and allows me to
cancel install or install without grub. If I install without grub I
  can install grub later.

However, if I connect an SATA optical drive and do an identical
install - all the same default options, using entire hard drive etc. -
  install completes successfully.

I have found and reported this PATA vs. SATA issue with Ubuntu server
and alternate CDs. Those issues seem to have been resolved by 11.04
and I have so indicated on those bug reports. It looks like the issue
needs to be addressed on the normal desktop install.
