Title:
Password for Encrypted LVM no longer valid
Status in “cryptsetup” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Did a fresh install on a number of laptops with the alternate CD of
Ubuntu 11.10. Encrypted LVM, whole disk, guided setup. Finished
install, applied all the upgrades that are available, restarted the
system a couple of times, everything works so I shipped them off to
our staff.
Two of the laptops, both HP ProBook 4530s (i5, 4 GB, 600 GB) came back
in a span of 14 days with the same symptom, the issued passphrase for
unlocking the encrypted LVM at boot is no longer valid. One of the
laptops came in twice with this problem. I had no choice but to wipe
the disks and reinstall them, booting off a live CD and trying to
access the the LVM with cryptsetup failed as well.
There is zero chance the users tried to change the passphrase in Disk
Utility and screwed something up.
