Further:
Have made both CD and USB stick from regular Desktop i386 iso.
USB stick gives 2 errors, both visible on two lines:
"error out of disk"
"error no suitable mode found"
Then it hangs no keyboard or mouse operational, do not believe they are being read.
Hard reset then needed

CD gives same as original error vis:
Select English, Select Install then:

"This kernel requires features not present with this cpu. pae"
"Please use correct kernel for your cpu." (or something close to those words, but same meaning)
Hard reset needed

Title:
12.04 Alt i386 iso error on boot . Feature not present. pae

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Pls also refer to Question #189941 which may be related, I have posted
  same there as comment.

I have similar problem, downloaded and burnt iso ubuntu-12.04-beta1-alternate-i386.iso from Ubuntu "Releases" page.
Dell Latitude D600 IGig memory 240Gig HD

CD appears to boot but then:
After Selecting "English" then "Install" from menu I get error:
"This kernel requires features not present with cpu. pae" Then something about selecting the correct kernel.

Previously tried Onecic 11.10 but almost unusable on this laptop
(though ok on my Samsung netbook, (after much compiz configging, but
which does not work on this machine) so reverted here to Maverick, now
trying 12.04 Precise to see if any better than 11.10.

Actually initially made USB stick but this did not boot. Then burnt a
cd from same iso. Chose Alt version because text said it could upgrade
as well as just install. Did not pick wrong version.
ubuntu-"12.04-beta1-alternate-i386.iso" is pasted from filename in my
download. Is this wrongly named on "Releases" page?

Will now try cooking version. (about 2 hours to download the iso here
  in Lincs uk)~
