I've had a chance to try this again, and the installation succeeded!
although I'd changed two environmental factors -

- a wired ethernet connection was available this time around
- I used 'Startup Disk Creator' from Natty to create the boot media rather than UNetBootin

I've now got this brilliant LUKS-protected Precise netbook, which I'm
very happy about.

I doubt UNetBootin is the culprit, so it appears an internet connection
is required for tasksel to do its job. If that's the intention, maybe a
note could be made in the installation process to remind users they
can't continue the installation without one.

Which renders this bug invalid, though needing network connectivity for
an image install may be a bug itself if verified.

Title:
Ubuntu alternate AMD64 install ISO fails, tasksel dialog culprit

Status in “debian-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
12.04 Precise Beta 1 64 bit alternate install fails to install
succesfully, getting hung up on the 'tasksel' process.

Selecting any of the options (OpenSSH, Desktop) produces the
  Installation Step Failed dialog.

Selecting none of the options results in completion of the install,
HOWEVER it will not boot... the boot process hangs...

When the boot process stops, hitting CTRL-ALT F7 displays a flashing
  cursor at the home position.

Hitting CTRL-ALT F1 and logging in to tty1 reveals there's been
nothing installed to ~ other than .bashrc .bash_logout, .cache and
  .profile

Discussions seen elsewhere (eg; Ubuntu forums) reveal this bug was in
Oneiric as well, blocking installs. There was some discussion that
tasksel is only supposed to be on the server install ISO and not the
  Desktop alternate ISO?

I've tried both the guided encrypted LVM install as well as the guided
full disk with no encryption with the same result.

(Also since no networking or removable media works, I can't get any
logs off the machine. I'll grep search it to help the developers
  though)

This on an Acer Aspire 1410 netbook.
