This was fixed in the maintainer's latest syntax highlighting package,
but his website seems to be down.
http://drchip.0sites.net/astronaut/vim/index.html#vimlinks_syntax

I have attached a working tex.vim that fixes the issue.

I have been using this version for some time and it seems to be stable.

** Attachment added: "A newer version of tex.vim that addresses the bug."

Title:
  tex syntax highlighting error

Status in “vim” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  TeX syntax highlighting is incorrect for:

  $X_{\{i\}}$  for $k$ in $S$ some text!?!

  There seems to be some confusion arising from the nested { } and \{ \}
  in the subscript. The highlighting is wrong from the i onward in this
  example. Highlighting is correct if the _ or the \{ \} pair is
  removed.
