running it manually after the installer crashes yields this:

ubuntu at ubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sdb1 
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?).

  it to install it where it belongs..

  It will happily install on any device with windows and ruin my windows
  installation and fail to load itself..
