What matteo sisti sette (matteosistisette) says is exactly the thing
that happende to me. He explained the situation well, and here is my
screenshot of the update manager:

I have the same problems with him, the packages are seemed to be
updated, but I cannot select them and no error is shown when I try to
check them. Also, at the bottom it says "There is no update to install".

I also have Ubuntu 11.10, and I have found another one who has encountered this problem here:

I think it is not a whishlist but an error of update manager or sources
list or whatever...

  If you click on a checkbox and it doesn't get selected, some sort of popup should appear saying "this item cannot be selected for this and that reason".

  Update Manager shows four available updates under "Release Update".
  The checkbox next to the title "Release Updates" itself is checked, but the checkbox next to the four items under it are all unchecked and I can't check them. If I click on them nothing happens.

  Below it says "There are no updates to install".

  If these are updates to packages that are not installed, they
  shouldn't be shown. If they can't be installed for some reason, an
  error message should be shown telling the reason.
