Thank you for reporting this bug and submitting a patch. Unfortunately,
as written, the maintainer scripts won't behave properly if update-
notifier-common is not installed so the attached debdiff is
inappropriate for inclusion in Ubuntu. While I appreciate the desire to
be able to remove a package that is otherwise unused on the system, I am
not convinced of the benefit of making the use of update-notifier-common
optional vs the added complexity in the package. At this time, I am
going to mark this bug as "Won't Fix". If you feel this is in error,
please file a new bug with a debdiff that allows the packaging to work
properly in either case. Thanks again, and please feel free to file any
other bugs you may find.

Title:
  ttf-mscorefonts-installer depends on update-notifier-common

Status in “msttcorefonts” package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  Since Ubuntu 12.04 ttf-mscorefonts-installer depends on update-notifier-common.
I don't need update-notifier, because I prefer check for updates manually, but removing it also removes MS fonts.
