Title:
Ubuntu 11.10 hangs at "Starting..." prompts
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I'm dual booting Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit on a Dell
XPS-L502X 64-bit computer.
The problem:
Booting up, Ubuntu 11.10 hangs at the "* Starting..." and "* Stopping..." prompts. The specific prompt that it hangs at changes every time I boot up, though there's usually a "[fail]" instead of [OK] for some of them. The specific ones that fail are:
"* Starting deferred execution scheduler"
"* Starting System V runlevel compatibility"
It's strange. I was able to successfully dual boot the computer and
boot into Ubuntu. The internet worked, additional NVidia graphics
drivers were being used - everything was fine. Then, I installed all
the updates from the Update Manager and some extra ones like build-
essential and freeglut. When I booted into Ubuntu later no additional
NVidia drivers were found, and Opengl code I had wouldn't run.
I tried getting the current nvidia drivers through apt-get, but when I
booted up again, I got stuck in the hanging problem I have now - the
problem doesn't get solved.
Some extra background:
I tried dual booting things before but had issues to the point that my
computer was stuck at the grub rescue prompt. Any data on the computer
was already backed up, so reinstalled Windows 7 64-bit from Dell's
recovery disc. When installing Windows, I split the disk into two
~350GB partitions and put Windows on the first, reformatting it.
The Windows installation worked fine.
I then installed Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit on the other ~350GB partition
using these instructions
http://thpc.info/dual/win7/dualboot_win7+ubuntu1110_grub_mbr_on_win7.html
That's how I got to where I am now.
Also, I'm using 11.10 instead of 12.04 because 12.04 didn't have
current NVidia drivers for my system. There were bug reports on this.
I don't know if there's a way to get my /var/log/syslog and
/var/log/partman files off my computer since it doesn't boot up
correctly. I've tried going into recovery mode as root, but that's
read only.
Thank you.
