Thank you for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better. To get more information about the reason for this problem, it is necessary to collect some information about your configuration. This can be done automatically using the "apport-collect" command. To run this command, please open a so called "terminal", by either pressing Strg+Alt+T or finding it in the menu via Applications menu -> Accessories -> Terminal
In this terminal enter the following
apport-collect 1016285
A window should open, leading you through the further process.
Regarding your update question: The version you are currently using
(10.04) is a so-called "Long Term Stable" release, i.e. a version that
is supported (gets bug fixes and updates) for 3 years. The version 10.10
is a "normal" release, i.e. it gets only supported for 18 months.
Therefore, since April 10.10 is no longer supported and you should not
upgrade to it (it is actually not easy to do so, anyway). 10.04 is still
supported until April 2013, so there is no need to rush with an upgrade.
If you want to upgrade, though, you can upgrade to the current LTS
release 12.04 (which will actually even be supported for 5 years).
Instructions how to do so are found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuDesktop#Upgrading_from_Ubuntu_10.04_LTS_to_Ubuntu_12.04_LTS
(but note that is is recommended to wait with this update until the
release of 12.04.1, due in August). One thing to keep in mind is that
the graphical user interface changed quite a bit in 12.04 compared to
10.04 which you might or might not like. Maybe have a look at the
desktop user guide first, to get an idea whether you want to upgrade or
not: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/index.html

Title:
trying to report a bug in Update Manager
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
(I don't speak computer techno-speak, so please explain as you would
to your grandmother. Thanks!)
This message pops up whenever I try to run Update Manager:
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
include the following error message:
'E:Dynamic MMap ran out of room. Please increase the size of APT
::Cache-Limit. Current value: 25165824. (man 5 apt.conf), E:Error
occurred while processing linux-image-2.6.32-36-virtual (NewVersion1),
E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_lucid-updates_main_binary-i386_Packages, E:The
package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS-- Lucid Lynx. I have tried to upgrade to
10.10, but haven't gotten anywhere. Do I need to upgrade or should I
stick with 10.4?
