Title:
detect attempts to read from embedded terminal widget and auto-expand
  it

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Deep in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-
manager/+bug/979661, we uncovered a problem with the terminal widget
not being expanded when a debconf prompt is presented. Michael hacked
around this by expanding it after five minutes of inactivity.
However, really, update-manager ought to be able to detect attempts by
child processes to read from its embedded terminal widget, assume that
that indicates a need to receive input, and expand the widget
  immediately.
