I confirm that this problem persists in 12.04's unity. It would be very
helpful to have an icon appear in the launcher when a USB stick is
attached.

Title:
No icon for USB drives on desktop or unity launcher

Status in “ltsp” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When a user plugs a USB drive into an LTSP client, no icon appears on the desktop or in the Unity launcher. The drive is shown in the sidebar of nautilus windows, but users do not know they have to look there. They expect an icon to appear. Most users give up immediately if nothing happens.
Having an icon appear will considerably improve usability in an everyday task.
