  Ubuntu Update Manager hangs when trying to upgrade anything

Status in “aptdaemon” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  In the last few days the Update Manager graphical tool hangs 100% of
  the time.

  It starts and shows the updates that are ready for download and
  installation and allows you to click on "Install Updates". When I do
  so, everything is grayed out and the mouse shows the wait pointer, as
  usual, but then nothing happens. The first time I waited just in case
  it would have been a timed something issue. Nothing happened even
  after 1h or so.

  Then I finally tried starting update-manager from my command line and
  got the errors reported below.

  I recall that python was upgraded not too long ago. Most certainly
  just before this started happening. Possibly the source of the
  problem? Any idea?

  IMPORTANT NOTE:

  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrate

  work just fine. Only the Update Manager GUI fails.

  Also, I get these as "no longer required" which in 99% of the time are
  still in use (from my experience,) but maybe one of these could be the
  culprit?
