I suppose you could try downgrading, make sure the original version
works, then upgrade again and see if it breaks. If it happens again,
then something the upgrade is doing must have killed the efi variables,
if not, then it may just be coincidence.

Title:
grub-efi update causes "Operating system not found"

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
This bug probably only affects laptops with immature efi implementations.
The uefi-bios of the lenovo x325 has a problem with the efi file structure of grub-efi. After the latest grub-efi update it would not boot but only displayed "Operating system not found". I fixed this by moving the grubx64.efi file from /EFI/ubuntu to EFI/BOOT and renaming it to: BOOTX64.EFI
  This was proposed at: http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/installation.html
I also tried using an efi startup script called "startup.nsh" containing just one line:
  fs0:\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi
I put this directly on the efi partition. However this alone did not work.
