Public bug reported:
I am trying to upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.3 LTS via web-download. It fails
with the error message below. I really wanted to upgrade to 12.04, but when
that failed, I tried previous version to see when the problem originated.
I was also unable to upgrade using a CD to these versions: 11.10 and 12.04.
Although Ubuntu can be started from the CD in either case, the screen
resolution is very coarse and very low. The buttons needed to go through the
installation procedure are not visible is either case. FYI, 9.10 works very
well.
Here is the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS error message:
______________________________________________________________________________
Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
Can not mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for upgrade
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the
'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in
the bug report.
