Evan,

There is no red dot with a minus sign on it that says please report the bug and doesn't allow me to install any other package anymore is what I meant when I said the error is not critical. (I'm using this as an excuse to blunder my way through it all - cos I am new to ubuntu. So pl. endure my mistakes)
I still get an error saying pycurl is not available in python. Is that due to some difference in the versions of python I have on my system? I think I have 2.6 version of python, although it says it is compiling UTF8 from 2.6.5.

When I ran apport as you suggested, it clearly stated that I have run
out of disk space.

Will keep in mind about the Ubuntu software centre link.

thanks,
Priya
