Don't know whether it's related, but even with thinkfan running, since
12.04, my T410s has started melting down (figuratively, just).

I posted it as a new bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thinkfan/+bug/1009731

Before 12.04, thinkfan was working fine for me. It seems to be working
okay, but temps run up to 100 C with all the processors going, even with
high fan. Disastrous for me....

Title:
Thinkpad T410s overheats with Maverick update

Status in “acpid” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: acpid

When I updated from Karmic to Maverick, my Thinkpad T410s started
overheating, with the CPU reaching temperatures in excess of 90
  degrees C.

  My fix: Following
  http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speed, I created
  /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad_acpi.conf with: options thinkpad_acpi
fan_control=1 and installed the package thinkfan. After rebooting, CPU
temperatures are around 50 degrees C.

This seems a potentially dangerous situation, and the Ubuntu
install/update program should be careful to preserve temperature
  control.
