peterzay, I see that this bug is reported against 10.04.  While 10.04
remains supported, it is unlikely that an issue such as this will
receive any further attention from the developers for 10.04.  Could you
perhaps test whether this is still present in 12.04?  There've been a
large number of fixes to plymouth handling between 10.04 and 12.04, so
this issue may already be resolved.

  With grub2 quiet splash commented out, I get the message "could not
  write bytes: Broken pipe" during shutdown.

  It is reproducible, but not every shutdown.
