I don't have a concrete solution, but gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest),
for instance, somehow recognizes that my hard drive is a SSD. This leads
me to believe that there is an instruction set already available with
which the type of a hard drive can be identified.

Title:
TRIM support not enabled for SSDs
Status in “partman-target” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
When creating the fstab, the discard option is not activated for SSDs
with TRIM support. But for performance reasons, it would be very
important to be activated.
1) lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release: 11.10
2) apt-cache policy partman-target
N: Unable to locate package partman-target
3) What you expected to happen
Partitions on disk devices with TRIM support entered in fstab with the 'discard' mount option
4) What happened instead
Partitions on disk devices are always entered without the 'discard' option in fstab
I hope this is the right package; I found no other package generating
the fstab.
